Listening to Steve Job’s words of wisdom at the commencement speech for the Stanford university back in 2005 is all inspiring. He is a living example that your lack of academic achievement is not a hindrance to your life success. His advice to ” Stay hungry, stay foolish” is a wonderful reminder that we need to keep on creating dissatisfaction in our current situation so that we will keep on growing by constantly fulfilling those need. At the same time cultivating the attitude of ‘ I don’t know” so we can keep on absorbing new ideas by learning all the time.
Are you in pain right now? Pain from heaps of unpaid bills, pain from isolation, pain from broken relationship. If you are, you are not alone. Though you may feel that no one understand you but in fact we all face emotional breakdown every once in a while. That is the very thing that makes us so human. We are all motivated by either running towards pleasure or running away from pain. If you look at products and services that are sold around us, it mostly focus on short term solution. Just look at the supermarket shelves and you will find multi-brand slimming products that offer solution to your weight problem effortlessly. We want to believe but deep down we know that , what you see is often not what you will get.
I look at pain as a warning sign for change. A strong reminder that we need to do something differently so we will not be in pain again. Instead of swallowing those pain killer (in metaphoric sense) and experience temporarily relief, take the long term approach which will lead to permanent change. I can still see it clearly in my mind , the poem by Walter D Wintle hanging on the wall just near the entrance of my parent’s old house about 20 years. I passed it many times and only read it a few times. Then, it did not seem that insightful. Today these words meant a lot to me. I guess the significance of those words will reveal itself when the right moment arrive. When in desperation, words like these seem to give new breath to the broken spirit. Something to hang on too until we are strong again. As thinking being, we can choose our destiny. Sometimes we are so trapped in our problems that we feel there’s no way out. Since reality is subjective, all we need to do is change our thinking and the solution will appear eventually. It is never easy to get a group of individuals to work together towards a common goal. We all know that we do not like to be push into or manipulated into doing the things we do not like to do. However, if we are lead by a leader who can inspire and give us a very compelling reason why we need to face the necessarily in order to be better than where we are, we tend to work towards that goal. I believe in setting up rules in anything we do because it gives us the freedom rather than shackled us down. I see rules as a way of defining the boundary where we can excercise our freedom. Rules are only meant to be broken with the intention of expanding the boundaries. Like wise, we need rules to forge a strong team. Everyone must agree to abide by the rules even though we are tempted otherwise. The leader has to ensure the enforcement of the rules and take action against those who do not abide by it. Rule no 1: Be early Always be early for meetings and appointments.I have purposely wind my wrist watch up by 15 mins so I will always be early for my appointment. Being early give me time to think things through and plan ahead for the desired outcome. It is also a form of discipline that make me feel that I am in control of any situation.
Rule no 2: Respect for your team mates There are some individuals that you just can’t find the chemistry to work with. However even though I may dislike the person, I could learn to respect him. Respect and feelings are not bounded to each other. Look at it this way, everyone has a strength we can appreciate and there will come a time when you may require his help. Rule no. 3: Never say impossible To grow beyond oneself, one has to break though personal self doubts, insurmountable challenges and non believers. The moment we profess that it is impossible, that is the moment we are destine to fail. Looking at history, there are many things that seems impossible then has become a norm today. I see the greatest challenge is overcoming self doubts and it is important that the group leader can persuade and inspire everyone to see beyond themselves. Ever team has a written or unwritten rules of what they should or not do. If you belong to any inspiring team, please share your thoughts on this.
I may not know this person personally but looking at his track record in coaching and leading the basketball team in UCLA to achieve record success is a testimonial of his outstanding coaching abilities.
